Abstract

Abstract The optical measurement of the mass concentration of atmospheric aerosol is influenced by size distribution, particle refractive index, particle density, and particle shape. Recent experiments indicate that a nearly linear relationship exists between light-scattering coefficient and mass concentration. The purpose of this paper is to present theoretical calculations and experiments relating mass concentration and light scattering as functions of the above variables. The conclusion is in agreement with observations and suggests that in most cases a range of +90% to -50% accuracy in the mass/light scatter ratio can be expected, owing to known variations in the pertinent aerosol properties.
