Abstract

Previous observations of the deformation of field-ion specimens are briefly reviewed. The observations described in this paper refer to one specimen which underwent repeated deformation by slip. The contrast expected from slip steps in the field-ion image is described and it is shown how such steps may be characterised. These present observations add new information on the slip process in iridium as well as confirming the dislocation contrast theory. In addition, using reasonable values of the stress required to move a dislocation, a value for one component of the mechanical field stress acting on a field-ion specimen has been calculated; together with some estimates of the stability of material protruding from the specimen surface.
