Abstract

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ Congenital Heart Surgery Database (CHSD) is the largest pediatric cardiac surgical clinical data registry in the world.1 The current CHSD mortality risk prediction model is incredibly robust with high area under the curve, calibration, and discrimination.2 A recent analysis demonstrated the fidelity of this model in comparison with newer machine learning models.3 The fundamental statistical approach is one of indirect standardization that calculates an expected (E) procedural mortality rate after adjusting for patient-specific factors, and using the observed (O) mortality rate, it calculates an O/E ratio and an overall adjusted mortality rate.
