Abstract

The possible origin of the x‐ray background (XRB) from a hot intergalactic medium (IGM), as opposed to discrete sources, is critically analysed. The Comptonization of the microwave background radiation by the IGM is discussed for an arbitrary electron distribution function, using a multiple–scattering approach for relativistic Comptonization. The recent spectral results from COBE can be used to rule‐out the existence of a homogeneous hot IGM as the dominant source of the XRB. The alternative possibility of Bremsstrahlung emission by a clumped IGM is considered.
