Abstract

Single crystals and polycrystalline samples of the disulfides, diselenides, and ditellurides of technetium and rhenium have been prepared and studied. All these compounds except ReTe 2 have layer structures. ReS 2 is triclinic and isostructural with ReSe 2, the structure of which is completely known. TcS 2 and TcSe 2 are also triclinic; their structure differs from that of the rhenium compounds but is probably related to it. TcTe 2 has a monoclinic structure, while ReTe 2 is orthorhombic. The optical band gaps of the sulfides and selenides which are essentially diamagnetic semiconductors, have been determined. The thermal decomposition of Re 2S 7 is described.
