Abstract

This study aimed at investigating how mentally ill people experience and evaluate their diagnosis. 16 in-depth interviews with patients with different mental health diagnosis were carried out. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using content analysis methods. The study participants reported rejection and stigma experiences in many areas of their life. On the other hand, they consider the diagnosis as necessary guidance and important starting-point for changes. Dealing with the diagnosis is often described as a long-term process which changes the perception of the illness and the person's own self-concept lastingly. The "adoption" of a mental health diagnosis is a protracted, complex and often painful identity-related process for the people affected. This process should be supported by suitable counselling services.
