Abstract

Intervention in the pre-diabetic state to prevent diabetes, its complications and cardiovascular death provides an enticing therapeutic target. Although no drug treatments are as yet indicated for this condition, recent clinical evidence may support active intervention strategies to prevent the conversion of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) to type 2 diabetes in the future. This article briefly reviews the current position in this field and considers the implications of findings from the latest clinical trials in subjects with IGT.
