Abstract

Mongolian medicine coexists with biomedicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and folk medical practices such as shamanic healing rituals in Inner Mongolia. With respect to Mongolian traditional society and culture, these healing rituals play an important role in treating physical and mental disorders in clients (patients). This paper firstly introduces Mongolian shamanism and the related research on shamanic healing; secondly considers the role of shamanic healing rituals, explains the healing process for shamanic illness in eastern Inner Mongolia, analyzes the interactive relationship between the shamanic initiation process and healing rituals, and discusses the rituals’ cognitive structure and symbolic effectiveness within the shamanic worldview; and finally describes the distinctiveness of the healing rituals for shamanic illness, the inherent healer–patient relationship, and the client’s role in “self-treatment” as part of the healing process.
