Abstract

The room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone rubber coating on the surface of insulator may increase the flashover voltage of contaminated insulators, which is designed to replace greasing and cleaning of insulators. The RTV silicone rubber coatings have been used in China to prevent pollution flashover of insulators due to their long service life and convenience. The paper presents a review of RTV silicone rubber coatings in China. Present day coatings are the result of nearly sixteen years of development and use. In all but a few dirty environments, these coatings have lasted fifteen or more years without maintenance and where maintenance has been found to be necessary, cleaning is done at a significantly reduced schedule. The paper focuses on the important characteristics of these coatings and on the rigorous attention that is required in their application in order to ensure good performance.
