Abstract

SPITZER, TAM M. The Development of Visual and Auditory Recall as a Function of Presentation and Probe Modalities, Serial Position, and Series Size. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1976, 47, 767-778. 5-, 9-, and 11year-old children performed a spatial recall task consisting of 4, 5, 6, or 7 items presented successively. Items were either visual (pictures) or auditory (spoken names of the pictures). Recall was probed using either visual or auditory recall cues. At all age levels and all serial positions, visual recall was significantly superior to auditory recall, regardless of cue modality. In addition, conventional serial position curves resulted for all ages. The serial position data were discussed in terms of previous explanations for the absence of primary effects with preschoolers (position bias, rehearsal deficiencies, and interference effects).
