Abstract
The Green Party was the first new political party to emerge on the Czechoslovak political scene after the November revolution in 1989. Environmentalist movements dating from before the revolution had a strong influence on the process of the patty's foundation. Its development since the revolution has been marked by a vague political orientation, indistinct attitudes to major policy questions, and internal struggles. Three independent provincial organisations officially exist, with a fourth ‐ the Prague organisation ‐ enjoying a semi‐official existence. The differences among all four are great. There are two major points of friction. The first concerns moves to set up an independent Slovak Green Party. The second is the suspicion caused by the Prague organisation's history and current behaviour.
