Abstract
Abstract Social class and inequality have been amongst the central topic areas within sociology. It is not surprising, therefore, that the investigation of these topics over the last half-century should have been significantly shaped by debates taking place within sociology itself Thus debates in social theory, as well as the specific theoretical contributions of Marx and Weber, have also had an important impact on class analysis. Our primary objective in this chapter, besides giving an account of Marx’s and Weber’s classic contributions, will also be to explore the impact of these varying theoretical inputs on the developing project of class and stratification analysis.
