Abstract

This chapter looks at the development of the peace concept as it has been used in the official documents caning out of the three conferences– the first one in Mexico in 1975, the second in Copenhagen in 1980, and the third in Nairobi in 1985. All three documents contain wording that pertains to the participation of women in decision-making regarding peace. Peace is taken to mean the absence of collective and direct violence between states. In 1975 the World Conference of the International Women's Year was held in Mexico City. The conference included UN member states. It adopted a World Plan of Action for the Implementation of the Objectives of the International Women's Year and it suggested that the decade 1976-1985 should be named the UN Decade for Women. In paragraph 274 governments, educational institutions, professional associations and nongovernmental organizations are asked to cooperate in the development of high-quality programs, books, and materials on peace education.
