Abstract
This paper describes the development of two sets of materials, each designed to help group day carers (workers in nurseries) and family day carers (childminders) assess, monitor and enhance the quality of their own provision. During an initial consultation phase, views on quality in day care were elicited from several key groups. These diverse and sometimes conflicting views were incorporated into a conceptual framework designed to reflect an inclusionary paradigm of quality. A review of the day care research literature was undertaken. The materials were designed with a commitment to principles derived from both social learning theory and experiential learning. The paper will describe the development, piloting and final format of the day care materials.
