Abstract
CRIMINAL COURT JUDGES daily face the frustrating task of finding just and effective dispositions for large numbers of mentally ill de fendants. One defendant, for exam ple, may be paranoid and refuse to discuss the charges with an attorney, another may be withdrawn and in coherent, another may offer as a de fense a complex delusion. Despite the growing sophistication of judges and attorneys in recognizing psychiatric problems, the courts often do not have the resources to provide for psy chiatric interventions for defendants
