Cavaliere, A. ; Danese, L. ; de Zotti, G. Abstract The variation of the total energy of a self-gravitating system due to a spheroidal shape of initial density perturbations after the recombination epoch is considered. The analysis of the special case of spherical symmetry is reviewed, and results are reported for a study of oblate spheroidal perturbations with an initial positive eccentricity and which initially follow the unperturbed Hubble flow. It is shown how the bounds for the spherical model envelop the spheroidal ones, and stochastic variations of the total energy related to the stochastic distribution of the initial density contrast are examined. The ensuing distribution of a cluster's dynamical and morphological properties is computed. The results are found to be consistent with catalog data.
