Abstract

Abstract Mental health services have been given a low priority within the health care budget. In particular, mental health and psychiatric services for children have been a largely neglected area. Primary mental health care services in Gauteng are virtually non-existent. Secondary services are limited and existing tertiary services are under-resourced. In order to develop child mental health and psychiatric services we need to expand and develop the service at all three levels. In addition to the need to create more posts in child mental health and psychiatry, there is an even greater need for training in these areas. This paper presents a brief overview of existing services in Gauteng. It contains proposals for developing these services together with a description of the development of a training programme for nurses working in child psychiatry and child mental health.
