Abstract

Previous in vivo studies on the effect of drugs, particularly those with mucolytic activity, on mucus secretion and properties have involved the use of either patients with obstructive airways disease or various anaesthetised animals although it has recently been shown that certain anaesthetic agents can modify mucus secretion and transport (King et al, 1979). The tracheal pouch in the conscious dog has been used to evaluate drugs affecting the antonomic nervous system (Shih, 1978) but no studies on the effect of mucokinetic agents have been undertaken using such a model. It is the purpose of this investigation to evaluate the tracheal pouch as a model for the investigation of agents which putatively alter mucus secretion or structure.
