Abstract

The development of a design criterion based upon fracture mechanics is described in detail. Specifically treated are crack tip plastic zone corrections, proximity effects on a crack adjacent to a free surface, buried and surface cracks, subcritical crack growth, and the effects of a biaxial stress state. Also included is the application of the criterion in predicting several rotor failures.
