Abstract

Traditionally, training of intensive care pharmacists has been ‘on the job,’ with little support from organised training programmes or specialised courses. The UK Clinical Pharmacy Association Critical Care Group developed key competencies for intensive care pharmacists and a syllabus to accompany this. This enabled individual pharmacists to map their skills, but there was no structured training programme to support it. The Midlands Critical Care Network pharmacist group identified this as a development need – both to support individual pharmacists in their training, and also to provide reassurance to Trusts of the type and breadth of training that band 7 pharmacists had undergone, particularly when moving from one Trust to another. This paper describes the development of a training pack for band 7 intensive care pharmacists by a collaborative group, and its subsequent dissemination nationally.
