Abstract

A new approach to control or the Clear Lake gnat, Chaoborus astictopus Dyar and Shannon, was developed and field tested. This control was based on the use of selective doses of insecticide to kill the susceptible larval stages of the gnat, without exceeding aceeptable levels in drinking water or causing any apparent damage to wildlife. Methyl parathion was used at doses of 2.3 and 3.8 ppb, applied at intervals to Clear Lake to achieve this. Procedures used and dose-mortality values obtained for various compounds on first- and fourth-instar gnat larvae and bluegill sunfish are presented, as are application methods and equipment.
