Abstract

The Hansen-Woodyard condition, which maximizes directivity for an endfire antenna, is modified in this paper to include attenuation, so that it is applicable to leaky-wave antennas. The optimum phase constant β for a 90% efficient leaky-wave antenna was determined. The original Hansen-Woodyard condition, yields a slightly narrower beam and higher sidelobes as compared to the modified Hansen-Woodyard condition. The optimum radiation efficiency for maximizing gain was approximately solved.
