Abstract

Abstract The uranium concentrations in some seaweeds have been investigated by using nuclear track detectors to register the neutron induced fission tracks from the uranium in the samples. The laminaria and the prophyra tenera were chosen as samples for their uranium determinations. Chemical etched fission tracks on the mica and the Lexan polycarbonate detectors after approximately 2 × 1015 n/cm2 integrated neutron flux irradiations were counted through an optical microscope at × 600 magnification. The average uranium concentrations in the laminaria and in the porphyra tenera were found to be 101.4 ppb and 164.4 ppb respectively.
