Abstract

A new technique for the interpretation of lava flow morphology was applied to a lava flow on Olympus Mons. The yield stress of the flowing lava was determined subject to uncertainties in the estimates of the slope of Olympus Mons. The lava is most probably more silicic than the basaltic lavas of the Hawaiian shield volcanoes and its effusion rate appears to have been greater than those of typical Hawaiian flows.
