Abstract
Abstract A method has been developed for the determination of the olfactory threshold of vapors and gases. It involves the dilution of a concentrated vapor or gas by a metering pump into an odorfree stream of air and an odor-free sampling system. Its advantage over other methods is the speed and accuracy with which odor thresholds can be determined. This method has been used to determine the odor of Telone® II Soil Fumigant in air. In a population of 22 persons, the concentration at which odor was detected was 4.4 ± 3.1 ppm (mean ± S.D.). This level is slightly above the current threshold limit value time-weighted average of 1.0 ppm but below the short-term exposure limit of 10 ppm.
