Abstract

On the basis of the Watson-Crick model of deoxyribonucleic acid, when the relative percentage of one of the four bases is known, the other three can be calculated. By means of the difference of the reactivity of adenine and the other bases toward bromine reagents, the relative percentage of adenine can be estimated. Thus, a simple spectroscopic method for the determination of the base composition of DNA by bromination was discovered and is presented.
