Abstract

AbstractCurrent industrial practice for the determination of free acid in hydrometallurgical zinc processing solutions has been reviewed in a critical manner. Most of the methods are unable to overcome entirely the problems presented by high concentrations of various hydrolyzable metal ions. Because zinc processing solutions commonly contain large concentrations of MgSO4, the use of the magnesium salts of EDTA and DCTA in place of the more conventional calcium analogues was evaluated for complexing metal ions prior to the determination of free acid. The MgEDTA solutions were particularly useful; an easily determined end point at ∼pH 6.3 is produced and total analysis time is 5–10 min. The method is equally reliable in sulphate or chloride media. Although MgDCTA is capable of providing comparably accurate results, the response of the glass electrode in its presence is sluggish and premature end points are often noted.
