Abstract

The calibration of a cylindrical TM010 microwave cavity for measuring the electron density in a long cylindrical plasma column is described for the case where the radius of the plasma column, the thickness of the glass discharge tube and the radius of the cavity are comparable. A comparison of the experimental value with that calculated by solution of Maxwell's equations is also given. Good agreement between these values is obtained, the error being less than 5%. It is also shown that there is a large difference between these values and those calculated according to perturbation theory.
