Abstract
Samples were removed during FeOOH growth reactions to determine the presence of crystalline intermediate species. A technique is described in which gelatin was used as a matrix for XRD analysis of intermediate species which are unstable with respect to air oxidation. During the formation of α-FeOOH from FeSO 4 and formation of γ-FeOOH in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or diaminocyclohexanetetraacetic acid (DACHTA), only reflections due to the [001], [002], and [003] planes of Green Rust II were detected. The role of EDTA and DACHTA in γ-FeOOH formation is discussed.
