Abstract

Carbonate-bound trace metals in soils may be extracted with 1 M CH 3COONa preadjusted to pH 5. A sufficient amount of 10 M CH 3COOH should be added to dissolve the carbonate and to overcome the suppression of buffer pH by the (CH 3COO) 2Ca formed and any dilution effect. The CH 3COOH must be added slowly in small portions to prevent a temporary fall in pH values to below 5, which could solubilize trace metals in the iron and manganese oxide fraction.
