Abstract

AbstractCharged particle activation analysis is used for the determination of boron, carbon and nitrogen in zircaloy. Carbon can be determined instrumentally using the 12C (d,n) 13N reaction. For the determination of boron and nitrogen the 10B (d, n) 11C and the 14N (α, αn) 13N reactions are used. 11C is separated as 11Co2 formed by dissolution of the sample in an oxidizing solution. Carbondioxide is trapped in sodiumhydroxyde. 13N is separated as 13NH3 which is trapped in 10 ml of 0.2 M hydrochloric acid. The yield of the chemical separations is determined experimentally. Concentrations of 0.163, 113.4 and 36.8 μg g−1 are obtained for boron, carbon and nitrogen respectively.
