Abstract

Summary The ‘Phenistix’ strip test for phenyl-pruvic acid has been assessed in relation to the detection of urinary PAS. It has been shown to be a very sensitive and reliable test for PAS, both in special investigations and in routine use. It has been compared to, and can replace, the usual ferric chloride and hypochorite tests, with much saving of time and trouble in clinics. When the patient has taken forms of other salicylates, sulphonamides or aminophyllin during the past twelve hours and the ‘Phenistix’ test is positive, the hypochlorite test should be used. This was found to be necessary in 5% of patients.
