Abstract

Solanum goniocalyxJuz. & Bukasov was published in 1929 (Juzepczuk & Bukasov). The type specimen cited was Juzepczuk 587 from Cerro de Pasco, dept. Junin, Peru, amongst other numbers (571, 572 from the same locality), together with numbers 157, 302, 316 from Tarma, 669 from Huamantango and 738 from Jauja. No herbarium was cited but since Juzepczuk worked at the Komarov Botanical Institute, Leningrad (LE), now St. Petersburg, it was assumed that the type specimen would be deposited there or at the N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry (WIR), where the second author, S.M. Bukasov worked. One of us (L.G.) has searched diligently in both Institutes but has not been able to find the specimen of Juzepczuk 587 originally cited. We therefore assume that it has been destroyed and that a lectotype is needed to determine the application of this name. The lectotype would best be chosen amongst the Cerro de Pasco collections, and there are two sheets of Juzpeczuk 571 at the St. Petersburg herbarium (LE) which match the original description very well. We therefore propose that the better of these two sheets of Juzepczuk 571 (LE) be designated as the lectotype of Solanum goniocalyxJuz. et Bukasov. We designate the second sheet of Juzpeczuk 571 as an isolectotype. The other material remains as paratypes.
