Abstract

It is very necessary to build the integrity of the oil and gas transport pipe network in the steady development of the oil and gas industry. There are a lot of oil and gas pipelines have been in service for more than two decades in China, which means a big security risk. Pipeline leak is a typical example of security incidents. Therefore, the establishment of a system of effective detection pipeline leak will be a priority. We propose fibre Bragg grating (FBG)-based optical fibre sensors for detecting pipeline leakage in oil and gas transportation systems. By placing a sensor on each end of a pipe, the velocity and position of the pipeline leakage can be detected through a series of calculations on the correlation analysis, the time difference, and the characteristics of surface waves. We improve the sensitivity and the accuracy of positioning for the FBG-based optical fibre sensors by enhancing the FBG strain response sensitivity.
