Rapidly emerging new technologies in mobile radio and satellite communications are quickly reshaping applications in many sectors of the economy. However, the benefit of mobile communications technology in today's systems is often limited by the use of proprietary communication protocols and a tack of separation between the application and communication aspects. This paper describes an approach of how to overcome lacking portability and missing application independence by the design and implementation of an open systems platform for mobile communications. This is achieved by the utilization of widely accepted industry and/or international standards, in particular the Internet (TCP/IP) suite of protocols. Technical issues in the implementation of the platform on an existing packet radio network. >
