Abstract

The aim of this study is to provide a design guide of the finite element analysis for the space frame with or without restrained torsion. In this study, the step-by-step analysis and design procedures for the practical finite element analysis and design method are presented. The orientation and approach for first order analysis of space frame elements is presented. Considering the stiffness matrix and equivalent load vectors of elastic space frames with and without warping restraint at nodes and the calculations is done using excel spread sheets. The solution for space frame is started by discretizing the domain into different elements and nodes then develop element stiffness matrices for each member using excel spread sheet. The Calculation of space frame according to the first order theory, where equilibrium conditions are written for a non-deformed structure which is presented to illustrate the procedure for the analysis. This method attains the finite element analysis and design requirements through member capacity check, deflection, and reaction calculations at nodes so as a practical finite element method, it is recommended for general use. The results of the sample frame are discussed, compared, and evaluated.
