Abstract

Abstract Face milling is a very important metal cutting process. In order to face mill accurately and effectively, the optimum design of a face milling cutter is pursued in this research. The method used is the uneven pitch method. The relationship between the teeth angle of the optimum cutter, θ‘i, and the teeth angle of the conventional cutter, θi, is θ‘i = θi +Δθ sin (mθi) where Δθ is the modulation amplitude and m is the number of times that the modulation cycle is repeated in one revolution. Spectrum analysis is made theoretically, and an optimum cutter is manufactured. Judging from the results of the experiment, the optimum cutter is far superior to the conventional cutter.
