Abstract

The heart of the Heavy Water Organic Cooled Reactor (HWOCR) system is the pressure tube assembly which forms the primary coolant channel and houses the nuclear fuel. Its design permits on-power refueling. The in-core portion of the pressure tubes is fabricated from SAP (sintered aluminum product), a low neutron-capture cross section material which is compatible with the organic coolant. A modular approach is used for the pressure tube assembly design. This article describes the following major areas of design and development: in-core pressure tube section, transition joint, end fitting assembly, shield plugs, pressure tube extensions, pressure tube assembly and fabrication.
