Abstract

Extension of a site on the banks of the River Fowey to accommodate a store for china clay at Fowey, South Cornwall involved excavation of a hillside parallel to the strike of slates dipping at 30–35° towards the river. Local instability of the slope at an early stage of excavation led to redesign of the excavated slope involving geotechnical mapping of the rock face and borehole investigation of conditions behind the face. Measures to ensure the short-term and long-term stability of the excavated slopes included relocation of the clay store, installation of an anchored reinforced concrete retaining wall and the anchoring and draining of the rock face. Design involved estimation of the maximum slopes that it would be advisable to cut in both weathered and sound slate, and assessment of the likely behaviour of the slopes as they were being cut.
