Abstract

Robust and simple imaging equipment is essential for use under farm conditions but advanced techniques may be suitable for research. Of the imaging methods now used in medical diagnosis, ultrasound, radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are attractive for livestock applications. Electrical impedance imaging, infrared spectroscopy and microwave tomography also deserve consideration. The description of body form is a three-dimensional process; its full realisation awaits the development of satisfactory soft tissue segmentation algorithms. Body function can be studied in terms of blood flow, structure motion and biochemical spectroscopy, the roles of which still have to be established.
