Abstract
The trench is one of the most characteristic features of the subduction zones. For a given arc or for all the subduction zones put together, relationships between their depth variations, the variations of the subduction rate and the age of the sinking lithosphere can be established. Certain other parameters have been examined with those mentioned above, but without success. It will be demonstrated that the observed relationships can be interpreted in terms of an elastic model and of a viscous model.
