W. ; Millar, T. J. Abstract The reaction between surface O(2-) and OH(-) ions on oxide grains and neutral atoms of S or Cl is predicted to lead to the depletion of these elements in clouds in which these species exist in the gas as neutrals. Strong depletion is predicted for F, while the depletion of Br and I will depend on the fraction of these atoms that is in neutral form in diffuse clouds. The reaction of S and Cl with surface ions may lead to observable optical and chemical effects. Two possible effects are (1) the weakening of the 2175-A band in regions of high gas density and (2) a saturation of the selective depletion of other elements.
