Abstract

Glass temperatures ( T g) for poly α-methyl styrene have been measured over the mol. wt range 0·15–140 × 10 4. For mol. wts ( M a) greater than 5000 the variation of T g, with M M can be represented by T g=T g(∞)−3·6×10 5M n −1 however, in order to describe the complete mol. wt range studied, it is necessary to apply the Gibbs equation using a flex energy of ∼ 1·2 kcal/mole. The free volume of a chain end is found to be ∼ 85 Å 3 which is approximately half the size of a monomer unit.
