Abstract

Xenon-induced Coulomb fission of 238U is studied in a quantum-mechanical model. Excitation functions, fragment angular distributions and the impact parameter dependence of the cross sections are discussed. Compared with earlier theories, sigma CF is lowered by one order of magnitude due to the strong rotation-vibration interaction in deformed nuclei. Good agreement is found with recent experiments.
