Abstract

The background to the Department of Energy's solar energy R and D programme is sketched, with particular reference to the ETSU (Energy Technology Support Unit) assessment published as Energy Paper No 16, and to the cn-going work of other Government Departments. The aims of the Department's 4-year solar energy R and D programme, announced in February 1977, are summarised and the approaches adopted in seeking suitable proposals from industry, research organisations, universities and polytechnics are described. Reference is also made to the Department's international activities through the EEC and the IEA. Progress to date is reviewed in the various applications covered in the programme, viz solar water heating, active solar space heating, passive solar space heating. Finally the possible future contribution to UK energy supplies from solar energy is considered, with particular reference to the Department's energy projections and to some recent scenario analyses carried out by ETSU.
