The main feature of the (three-dimensional) spatial density is the proportionality law p r - . The detectability of deviations from this singular density is scrutinized, and corollaries bearing on the determination of masses of clusters of galaxies and on the cosmological picture of the Universe are discussed. A realistic cutoff to the singular density profile at 5H100 -1 Mpc yields a lower limit > 0.25 to the density of the Universe, and an upper limit z < 3 to the redshift at the epoch of formation of clusters of galaxies, but the limits can be relaxed somewhat if the cutoff radius is smaller.
