Abstract

Summary This paper examines the teaching modes employed, and the cognitive demands made on pupils, during eighteen RE lessons given by three teachers in one school. Verbal transactions, written and practical tasks are analysed. The suggestion is offered that teachers could make more opportunities to improve the quality of pupils' thinking during verbal transactions in lessons and that the nature of tasks set should be examined more closely from the standpoint of cognitive demand.
