Abstract

Known for long as the “cockpit” of Europe, modern Belgium and the Netherlands share more than a common history. Belgium and the Netherlands form part of this vital communications zone; one or both could eventually become an enforced refuge prior to a second Dunkirk. There can be absolutely no doubt that NATO needs their political, diplomatic, military, economic, and moral support; they themselves also need NATO. The vestiges of neutralism are stronger in the Low Countries than in many others, and have been so over quite a prolonged period of years. Future historians will surely have cause to admire, and perhaps to praise, NATO's longevity, endurance, and deterrent value despite the weaknesses displayed at present by unmilitary member states such as Belgium and the Netherlands. Perhaps multiple main observations are in order about the defense forces of Belgium and the Netherlands.
