Abstract

Head and neck lymphedema can be a debilitating side effect of radiotherapy. Treatment options include manual lymphatic drainage, complete decongestion therapy, acupuncture, selenium, submental liposuction, and lymphaticovenular anastomosis. Although these treatment modalities may benefit many patients, some patients continue to have persistent symptoms. Here we present a case of a patient with head and neck lymphedema which was successfully treated with a deep plane face and neck left. Our case report suggests that deep plane face and neck lifts are a viable and safe treatment option for patients with head and neck lymphedema which does not improve with conservative measures. Further studies are needed to compare the long-term results of submental liposuction, lymphaticovenular anastomosis, and deep plane face and neck lift to determine the optimal surgical management for head and neck lymphedema.
