Abstract

The decay modes of the proton (bound neutron) are studied in detail in the SU(5) and SO(10) grand unified theories of weak, electromagnetic and strong interactions. Branching fractions to specific two-body final states are estimated using non-relativistic SU(6) arguments. It is found that the branching ratios to experimentally optimal modes, such as n → e + π −, are large.
